Keep the patches dry

Your clinic will tell you how long the patches need to stay in place. During that time, avoid showers, swimming, and activities that soak the test area. Moisture can loosen the adhesive and make it harder to know which substance was tested at each site.

A quick wash at the sink may be easier than bathing while the patches are attached. Take care not to splash the test area, and ask your clinic what it recommends if a patch becomes wet or starts to lift.

Limit heat, sweat, and friction

Heavy exercise, hot environments, and tight clothing can cause sweating or rubbing around the patches. Choose loose, breathable clothes and keep activity gentle until your clinic says the test is complete.

  • Do not scratch or peel at the patches or marked test sites.
  • Avoid putting creams, oils, or lotions on the test area unless your clinician advises it.
  • Make a note if a patch moves, lifts, or comes off early.

After the patches come off

The reference marks help your clinician match a skin reaction with the correct test substance. Protect those marks and follow the clinic's instructions about washing, bathing, and taking photographs.

Contact your care team if you develop a severe or worrying reaction. Do not rely on a photograph or online article when you need medical advice.
